In a move that has been controversial in the United States, Walmart has integrated sex toys into its shelves in stores in that country.
Leventhal 's Clio PlusOne line reaches more than 4,300 of the largest U.S. retailer's 4,700 stores. The only states where it will not be available are Virginia and Alabama; whose legislation does not allow it.
The brand has had a presence in stores since 2018, but now it is looking to integrate three new products into its catalog: Sex toys.
The movement doesn't seem to please everyone; and it France Mobile Number List even seems to be contrary to the identity of Walmart, whose corporate culture seems to be rather conservative.
Through a statement cited by The NewYork Times, the brand stated that this is not a new category for them; since it has been selling vibrators from different condom brands such as Trojan, Durex and Lifestyles for some time. However, as a much more specialized brand, the integration of Clio's PlusOne seems like an important step towards the sex toy industry.
Each product is waterproof, rechargeable and made from body-safe silicone. They cost $10 to $53, much less than “designer vibrators” from companies like Lelo, which can cost $75 to $200.
Sexual wellness market
Sex always sells and in the world of technology, even more so. According to a 2018 report by Frost and Sullivan, the “women's technology” market, which includes the sexual wellness category, could be worth $50 billion by 2020.
On the other hand, a report prepared by Ibis World in 2018 says that the adult store industry earned $9.5 billion in 2018, and sex toys make up almost 80 percent of that income.
It is not for less. Sex toys are closely linked to the wave of female empowerment, from a sexual angle. These have become particularly popular among women who seek to get rid of prejudices and live a sexuality free of prejudices.
In 2002 Leventhal founded Clio with the goal of selling personal grooming toys at a lower cost. Now, with a broader vision, the company has five new departments:
Toiletries.
Nail care.
Skin care.
Cosmetic devices.
Sexual well-being devices.
Female sexual empowerment
For a couple of years now, women's sexuality has been one of the most prominent topics. Sexual liberation has been essential so that women can express more openly about their preferences, their way of experiencing pleasure and even their sexual life.
The growing social movements that promote women's empowerment have not focused solely on public spaces. They also focus on intimacy. Self-care and sexual pleasure have become especially relevant for these movements, as a way of assuming empowerment from within, to later take it to public spaces.
Eradicating prejudices around female pleasure seems fundamental to the struggles that these movements still have to wage. It is a crucial step to end the prosecution of women who freely live their sexuality. From this, problems as serious as the re-victimization of women who suffer harassment or rape can be combated; and the power to freely exercise reproductive rights is normalized.
In the last eight months, Clio has sold more than one million units of PlusOne. The company now makes up more than 26 percent of the sexual massager market, according to Nielsen.
